The Interior Design Directory
British artist and designer Sophie Harpley paints patterns by hand for linen and wallpaper, drawing on botanical forms, modernist painting, European travels and antique finds. Her loose, spontaneous brushwork retains movement and imperfection, bringing a fresh interpretation to traditional motifs. Printed by skilled artisans in England, her designs reflect an instinct for colour and the natural world, alongside her belief that - as well as timeless and sustainable - handmade interiors are more characterful and comforting.
The Story behind
Sophie grew up in the West Country, drawing, exploring outdoors and helping her mother spread bolts of fabric across the kitchen table to make curtains. Her earliest memory is of a dainty floral wallpaper in their Victorian home. After studying in Sussex, she began her creative career at London’s V&A Museum, later returning to art school in Bristol. Now based in rural Oxfordshire, she draws many of her ideas from the colours and shapes found in flowers and foliage, with her original patterns printed by skilled artisans in England using eco inks on 100% linen, and wallpapers made from replenished forests.
Services
Sophie offers a bespoke design service, from customising the colours or basecloth of an existing print to creating an entirely original pattern for exclusive use. Working from references or developing a palette collaboratively, she can tailor designs to a particular scheme, with prints available as fabric, wallpaper or original artwork applied directly to a surface. Restoration work is also undertaken. For UK clients, she can source antique furniture and arrange specialist upholstery and reupholstery, including in her own linen designs.
