WHY WE DO THINGS THE HARD WAY

Making linen to order

The co-founder of British linen brand Sirimiri on meaningful making, craftsmanship and longevity, and why buying made to order means investing in the human hand and lasting quality.

A woman with long brown hair sits at a desk, sketching on paper. She is surrounded by books, a candle, and art supplies, with a creative mood board full of images, fabric swatches, and notes behind her.

There is probably an easier way to do what we do, but it wouldn’t result in the pieces I want to put my name to. When we founded Sirimiri, we made a conscious decision not to chase speed or volume. I’ve always believed that the objects we live with every day should be made with care and intention, and that takes time. We work largely made to order, creating bed, bath and table linens tailored to individual spaces. Whether through scale, colour or finishing, each piece is personalised. Linen shouldn’t be an afterthought. This way of working takes longer, but it allows us to create collaborative pieces that are beautiful and made to last.

Where something is made matters

We work with specialist makers in Italy because they bring generations of expertise to their craft, and the finished product connects our customers to people, skills and traditions. Being close to the makers behind our products allows us to offer a more considered service. Every detail is customisable, and every piece is unique. Designers require flexibility in scale, colour, embroidery, trims and detailing. One of the things I love most about what we do is that every piece represents the work of a whole chain of talented people. While every collection begins in our London studio, it is the knowledge, precision and dedication of these makers that bring it to life.

Longevity begins long before a product is made. It starts with sourcing materials and understanding exactly where they come from. For us that means tracing fibres back to their origin, often all the way to the farmers who grow and cultivate them. Those decisions have a significant impact on the quality, performance and lifespan of our products. From there, longevity comes from thoughtful design and craftsmanship. If something is well made, functions beautifully and continues to bring pleasure over time, it naturally earns its place in a home for years.
